SHERMAN, TEXAS-The Austin College Kangaroos men’s soccer team opened their 2025 season with a 2-0 win over the Howard Payne Yellow jackets Sunday at Jerry E. Apple Stadium in Sherman.
The Roos were led by sophomore Luis Garza-Rios. Garza-Rios scored both Austin College Goals in the second half.
“It’s always great to win your first game of the year,” Austin College head men’s soccer coach Taylor Goyen said.
Coach Goyen said Howard Payne played them tough
“Howard Payne (0-1), props to them; they played a very tight game with us ,” Coach Goyen said. Going into the half we were stressed about how we were going to find the back of the net.”
Coach Goyen said his guys responded well.
“Once they found one (goal) they found another one,” Goyen said.

Luis Garza -Rios who was the star of the game was injured throughout fall camp. Coach Goyen said Sunday was his first real game back.
“Props to him,” Coach Goyen said.
The Kangaroos (1-0) have 9 days to prepare for their next game. The Austin College men’s soccer team will play Dallas Christian Tuesday night September 9th at 8 p.m. The game will be played at Austin College.
