TEXARKANA, Texas (AP) — Texarkana Independent School District Superintendent Doug Brubaker has accepted the superintendent position with Chesapeake Public Schools in Chesapeake, Virginia, the district announced Monday.
Brubaker, who has led Texarkana ISD since January 2021, will continue working with the district during the transition as the Board of Trustees begins the search for his successor.
“It has been one of the greatest honors of my career to serve the students, staff, families and community of Texarkana ISD,” Brubaker said in a statement. “While I am excited for this new role, leaving Texarkana is very difficult.”
Board President Amy Bowers thanked Brubaker for his leadership and wished him well in his new position.
“On behalf of the Texarkana ISD Board of Trustees, we congratulate Dr. Brubaker on this well-deserved opportunity,” Bowers said. “We are grateful for his leadership, his commitment to our students and the positive impact he has made on our district.”
Vice President Paul Miller also praised Brubaker’s tenure, saying he led the district “with integrity, compassion and a focus on students.”
According to the district, Brubaker oversaw a $189 million bond program that included construction of a new prekindergarten center and a career and technology center for the high school. The district also said the number of students graduating with an associate degree increased significantly during his tenure.

The district said its STEM-focused elementary school was ranked No. 3 in Texas by U.S. News & World Report in 2025 and noted Brubaker received the Texarkana Area NAACP’s Benjamin Dennis President’s Award the same year.
The Board of Trustees said it will announce additional details about the superintendent search and transition process in the coming weeks. District officials said they plan to maintain regular communication with staff, families and the community throughout the transition.
