The Sanger Lady Indians are now one win away from the UIL State Tournament after holding off a late rally to defeat Richland 7-6 in Game 1 of the UIL 4A Region 2 Finals on Wednesday night.
Sanger built an early lead and used timely hitting, key defensive plays and late relief pitching to secure the victory.
The Lady Indians jumped ahead early and carried a 7-1 advantage through four innings before Richland mounted a comeback attempt late in the game. Sanger was able to close the door in the final inning to preserve the Game 1 win.
Sanger scored 4 on Richland in the third inning
The biggest turning point came during the bottom of the third inning when Sanger scored four runs to take control of the matchup. Lily Wilson highlighted the inning with a two-run home run, while Dalilah Millan and Abby Chapmond each added RBI hits, the team said.
Sanger finished the game with seven runs on seven hits, including one home run and three extra-base hits.
Dalilah Millan led the offensive effort with two hits and two RBIs. Lily Wilson added a home run and two RBIs, while Paige Child contributed a hit and two RBIs. Tarryn Liechty also sparked the offense with a triple.
Inside the circle, Abby Chapmond pitched 6.1 innings before Paige Child entered in relief and recorded the final outs to earn the save and secure the victory.
With the win, Sanger now moves one step closer to the state tournament.
Game 2 of the series against Richland is scheduled for Thursday night at Denton Ryan High School.
