AUSTIN, Texas — Texas shoppers will have an opportunity to save on back-to-school purchases during the state’s annual sales tax holiday Aug. 7-9.
The tax-free weekend begins Friday, Aug. 7, and continues through midnight Sunday, Aug. 9. During the holiday, most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 can be purchased without state or local sales taxes.
Eligible clothing and footwear generally include shirts, pants, jeans, dresses, shoes and boots priced below $100 per item. Certain specialty athletic equipment and accessories, including football pads, jewelry, handbags and purses, are not included in the exemption.
Computers and software not included in Texas Tax free weekend
Many common school supplies priced under $100 also qualify, including notebooks, binders, folders, pens, pencils and standard calculators. Computers and software are not included in the tax holiday.
Student backpacks priced under $100 are also eligible, including certain wheeled backpacks and messenger bags.
The exemption applies to qualifying purchases made at Texas stores as well as eligible purchases from online or catalog sellers doing business in Texas. Shoppers do not need to provide an exemption certificate to receive the tax break on qualifying items.
Consumers shopping online should also pay attention to delivery and shipping charges because those costs can affect whether an item remains below the $100 eligibility threshold.
