Copperas Cove Police said that one of their officers was killed Saturday in an officer involved shooting. The suspect in the case is also dead after taking his own life, police said.
Copperas Cove Police posted on social media the details of the tragic sequences in the case.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the line of duty death of Officer Elijah Garretson, badge number 118,” Copperas Cove Police said.
Texas Rangers are investigating
“At our request, the Texas Rangers are conducting an investigation into an officer involved shooting that occurred on January 10, 2026,” Copperas Cove Police said.
The event resulted in the on-duty death of Officer Garretson, authorities said.
“The suspect was later located, and following a lengthy negotiation attempt; the suspect took his own life,” Police said.
“As we begin to navigate this incredibly difficult time, we ask for understanding and patience as our department, Officer Garretson’s family, and our law enforcement family grieve this tremendous loss, “Copperas Cove Police said. “Out of respect for all those affected and the ongoing investigation, no further information is being released at this time.”

Copperas Cove Police said that they ask the community to keep Officer Garretson’s loved ones and their department in their thoughts and prayers.
